Think outside of the rectangle!, May 9, 2011

I love Sandra's book. In 40+ years of knitting, I have never seen a knitting book like this. It is clear that Sandra not only understands the unique benefits of her swirl shape, but has found a way to make these garments accessible to both beginning and experienced knitters looking for a new adventure. Experienced knitters who are comfortable with knitting or modifying the rectangular shapes of most knitted projects -- scarves, sweaters, etc. should look at this book with a fresh eye. Knitting a Swirl is for those knitters who are able to "think outside of the rectangle" and enjoy the wonderfully flattering and flexible fit of Sandra's unique garments. And Sandra holds your hand every step of the way.

When you pick up this book, leaf through the yummy designs and drool a bit, but don't short change yourself (or the book) by skipping the preliminary "how to" chapters. It is here that Sandra shares all the tips and tricks that make these jackets truly accessible to all knitters. Knitters who need to go "by the pattern" are given TWO methods of reading the same pattern; "stash" knitters are given clear guidelines on how to successfully substitute yarns; and the oh, so necessary notes on how to predict the fit of these Swirls are all included.

We now have two truly unique Swirls in the family -- both with successful yarn substitutions based on Sandra's guidelines. I loaned the book to my mother (who had not knit anything for over 30 years) along with a bag of bits from my stash and asked her to knit the cover Swirl for my niece's graduation present. I have also knit another Swirl taking the recommended substitution guidelines to heart. What fun! Once I understood the structure, I was able to lengthen my favorite Swirl to fit my height!

Please don't be put off by a less enthusiastic review that suggests the "one seam" is the same as "set in sleeves." Having actually knit one of these projects, the "one seam" is a true "no brainer" seam that supports and makes the garment hang beautifully. There are no set in sleeves in this garment. If you've never been able to knit a garment that fits, try a Swirl!

The allure of the Swirl is multifaceted. One piece, one seam construction certainly gets my attention. Having witnessed for myself the way that a single jacket can flatter so many figures, the "miracle sweater" moniker certainly fits. Sandra asks the knitter the throw away the notion that body circumference measurement dictates size, presenting instead a simple measurement that determines one's Swirl size. In addition, she gives styling options whereby a single figure may well fit all three sizes of a given Swirl jacket. Swirls are separated into four silhouette categories based on their structural characteristics. Within each silhouette, she gives multiple variations on trim, fiber type, yarn weight and shaping. While overwhelming to pick a single favourite, the silhouette overview is an excellent starting point to assist you choosing your own perfect Swirl. With eighteen designs in all, it's a pretty safe bet there's one for all of us.

One gets the sense these garments have not been designed, but engineered. For those who see the circular form and assume these are more of those "circle with armholes" sweaters to which we've become accustomed, think again. Sandra has devoted years of study to bring us well past the "target sweater", and the improvement is nothing short of monumental. Designs are presented in an array of yarns, some of them very decidedly on the high-end side. With a book of this style, it seems only fitting. Numerous notes are given on yarn substitution, which should help those on a more restrictive budget, but I feel more inclined to save up some stash cash and spring for something really special in a few months' time.

Designers beware: this book is not a springboard to guide you in designing your own Swirl, nor does it claim to be. As an incorrigible tinkerer, I am guilty of modifying patterns to the point that the finished product is barely recognizable. Given the unique fabric produced by Swirl shaping, this has the potential to yield very unpredictable results. I think I'll let Sandra, the veteran, design my first Swirl on my behalf. I continue to thumb through my copy of the book almost nightly, and have still not determined which design that will be. Swirl knitting is not about instant gratification. The initial cast-on of 500+ stitches alone guarantees that. As the knitting takes shape and the sweater grows inward, it begins to move more quickly. The reward for patience and trust will be a unique, stunning and inspiring garment. With incredibly detailed schematics, visually arresting photography and notes on wearing variations, you'll feel Sandra is with you every step of the way.

Fleas abandon ship!, August 11, 2009

Every few years we have a flea outbreak amongst our dog and four cats. Our veterinarian sends us home with Frontline drops which do not help us with current fleas as it takes several cycles to work, and most veterinarians do not carry the spray any longer. While the smell of the spray can be overwhelming, it gets the fleas off immediately! As you spray, the fleas surface and fall off the pet on to the floor. While the product claims that it is good for a month, we notice relief for about 7 - 10 days. During that time frame we will find new dead fleas on them that have hopped on from outside or from the carpets. This 7 - 10 day window gives you time, however, to do a fairly thorough house cleaning to get rid of the fleas. We do spray a second time which appears to eradicate all the fleas.

This is a good product, I have tried many sprays for fleas, as this year we had a bad flea infestation, and I have to say this product did work better than most of the others I tried. The only downfall of this product is that its a bit expensive for the size you get.

When Frontline Spray was first brought out several years ago it was the most expensive product of it's kind on the market (that I knew of). But that didn't matter. It worked and it worked extremely well. The smell was mild and acceptable and the liquid was long lasting- up to six weeks or more. The dogs and cats I used it on soon began to accept the occasional sprayings with gratitude. The fleas would fall off immediately onto their little backs- stone cold dead. The ticks would dry up and could be brushed off by the next day or so. Fantastic. Everyone was happy.

This was a product that although owned by a French company was manufactured in the U.S. and I presume France as well. But I seemed to get the U.S. product here in Texas.

After a couple of years, and a couple of price increases, I noticed that the strength of the product was noticebly weaker than the original version. It seems that it gets weaker with each subsequent bottle that I buy. And yes, even though the miracle active ingredient has been cut repeatedly the price keeps going up. Now the fleas, at least a few of them, still fall off while spraying; but now, the little fellers just roll over, dust themselves off and promptly jump right back on the dog or cat. The ticks eventually get sick of the stuff after a few days and walk off to who knows where. Days and weeks later there are still a few fresh fleas and ticks that show up and ride around for a few days until I do a mild touch -up with the weak spray. This is the result from the product that I get now that is labeled as being manufactured in France. Seems they may be a tad greedy and getting more so. That's the only way I can explain it. The active ingredient is Fipronil.

So, after years of wholeheartedly recommending the product, I'm back to recommending the strong and effective Adams Spray. It's far more cost effective. It's just that everyone involved hates the strong odor. But it works as well as it has for many years and the price won't bust your budget to the point where you have to be late on your next car payment just to get the danged fleas off your pet.

Another product I've recently found to be very effective and relatively inexpensive, but labor intensive (depending upon your particular pets), is Zodiac Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs and Cats. It's effectiveness seems to last well for three to four weeks. Its active ingredients are Piperonyl Butoxide Technical and Pyrethrins.

So, to sum up, the manufacturers of Frontline Spray have taken what was a wonderful product available at a high, but fair, price and tinkered with it until now it's a mediocre product with an outrageous price.

I have two cats and they both love Secret Squirrel. He has a velcro tummy that you can open up and stuff full of catnip. He comes with two little catnip "tea bags" to stuff in him, but my cats prefer the loose leaf catnip inside him. That way if you give him a good rub between your hands the catnip is refreshed and smells new. They like to carry him all over the house and toss him in the air. It's definitely one of their favorite toys. They also enjoy the chipmonk version of the same toy.

I have a kitty that I adopted at the local Animal Welfare League where she'd been abandoned with a note saying her previous owner had passed away and she (the cat,) needed a new home. She's almost six years old, had been declawed, and had no desire to play with anything other than to bite me whenever the mood struck her. Now, however, she -LOVES- to play with her squirrel, tossing it, stalking it, chasing it, doing the old rear paw burn out with it, so I have to say that I am impressed. It's the first thing she looks for in the a.m. when she wakes up, even before nagging me for her morning food. I'd bought her freshly cut catnip, fresh-growing catnip and some of the packaged stuff and she ignored it all. Since I put some of the cheap, dry stuff into the squirrel's catnip pouch, she has even learned to enjoy the catnip. I'm happy for her, as she had done little other than sleep and eat since I adopted her. She's finally being a kitty again.

This book with charming and goofy watercolor cats contains all the useful and entertaining information as the first one but will be so much more accesible to children. My daughter and I read "How to Talk to Your Cat" and were amazed by the number of inaccuracies stated throughout the book.

The author states that cats are "completely self-sufficient and can leave you at any time and go off and make a living." It's this kind of ignorance that contributed to the explosion in the feral cat population we face today! People pick up and move and abandon their cats thinking they can fend for themselves. Hunting is learned by watching other cats, and then putting those lessons into practice until they are perfected. Offspring of non-hunting cats rarely make good hunters themselves. In other words, house cats that have never been outdoors could never just "leave at any time and go off and make a living." They'd starve to death!

She also states that "cats are loners" and they "don't like company, including other cats." Cats are not anti-social. They have intricate social interactions with their own kind. Two of my cats are very social; they love the attention of people (even those they just meet) and the camaraderie of other felines. Feral cat colonies are found in every city and town throughout the world--the perfect example of their social nature. Cats also possess the ability to form close friendships with people. I own 8 cats and I have a unique relationship with each one. They are my babies and I couldn't imagine life without them.

She recommends only having one cat. She goes on to state "cats dislike other cats and will fight." Cats are social beings; they do like other cats and the only time they fight is to establish territory or male dominance, not because they dislike one another.

The author tells us that cats are o.k. with our leaving; they will not sulk. She doesn't know my cat Amber. Once I pull out the suitcases, she knows what's about to follow. She follows my every move when I go from room to room to gather things to pack all the while whimpering. I once had to cut a vacation short when her caretaker told me she wasn't eating or using the litter box. She was so upset by my absence.

Finally, she states that "the deeper the claws dig [into furniture], the more status the cat has." Huh? Scratching is a way of marking territory. Depth of the scratch has nothing to do with status. Feline social standing is measured by the amount of land a cat can lord over it. At the top of the hierarchy are unneutered males, followed by females that haven't been spayed, spayed females and at the bottom are the neutered males.

Her book would have been better suited for the fiction, not non-fiction classification.

I find it ironic that the author doesn't even own a cat, yet somehow she feels she has the knowledge and expertise to write a book about them.

This is ESSENTIAL for truly enjoying your cat(s) and having them truly enjoying themselves...it's a cat toy that they'll actually USE, not one that just looks good in the store and then collects dust as soon as you get it home.

I discovered it on the cats dot about dot com forum, and it's totally lived up to all the raves it got there. (BTW, that forum is an excellent resource for cat info in general, especially cat food information.)

The key with using DaBird is to occasionally let your cat capture the feather prey so it won't get frustrated and stop responding altogether.

Also it's good to make the cat STALK the DaBird...put the feathers behind something and just make noise with it, soon your cat will approach it on tiptoe, crouch, and spring. It's a beautiful sight to watch all the predatory instincts come out in your otherwise normally subdued domesticated kitty.

Using this toy say 15 minutes a day with your cat will provide it with plenty of exercise, mental as well as physical, and this in turn will keep your cat happier and less likely to vent its energy on your plants, rug, etc. It can also provide YOU with some exercise, too! Sure beats watching TV all the time...

I'd give this TEN stars if I could!

Before introducing them to Da Bird, my two indoor cats were none too impressed with any of the myriad of cat toys I had purchased for them. In fact, they were much more enthralled by a plain old drawstring that I had removed from a pair of sweatpants than by any of the various mice, balls, or wand toys that I futilely dangled in front of them. Da Bird, however, has them in an absolute frenzy, so much so that they know it by name. If I even motion toward the living room, where we typically engage in our Da Bird sessions, the cats will come darting in immediately in eager anticipation. I don't know if it's the the colorful feathers, or the spiral flying motion, but something about Da Bird drives my cats wild. I never before had heard my cats growl or hiss, until the first time they each proudly captured the bird in their jaws. They will chase, chew, and bat at the thing until exhaustion, and not boredom, brings and end to the play time. Many thanks to the inventor of this toy, for it has allowed me to throw out my cluttered congeries of useless mice and balls, although I'm still hanging on to the sweatpants drawstring.

A note of caution...If you want each bird to last as long as possible, it's a good idea to stash the toy away after use. Otherwise, you may return to find a shabby, featherless, and rather un-aerodynamic object. Even with proper storage, I still replace the bird about once every 3 weeks or so due to wear. Also, I found that the string needs to be replaced every so often as well. Rather than purchase an entire new wand, I simply bought a spool of elastic stretchrite thread and replace it myself.

Great toy - but fiberglass splinters dangerous to cats and people!, January 18, 2011

We first purchased a "Da Bird" cat toy, based on its mention on the ASPCA website. Our cats loved the toy from the start: enough so that we purchased a second one along with some feather refills. The cats get a ton of enjoyment and exercise with these, and having two toys allowed us to play with both cats at once.

Unfortunately, during one session, a few weeks after buying them, my wife felt a burning/stinging on her hand where she was holding the wand. Upon closer inspection it was apparent that the wand, made of fiberglass, was damaged, and splintering at the "handle" end, leaving dozens of shards of fiberglass in the palm of her hand and fingertips. The shards are painful and tiny. Removal was only possible with tweezers and a flashlight; even then only a few of the largest shards could be pulled from her hand. She had to let the rest of them "work their way out" over the next few days.

Needless to say, we were alarmed by the hazard Da Bird was causing, not only to us but more seriously to our cats. -Our boy cat is especially fond of playing with and chewing on the wand end of the `fishing pole' type cat toys. Had he gotten a paw or his mouth on the splintering fiberglass wand, he likely would have been in real pain and/or danger.

Doing a simple Google search of "Da Bird fiberglass splinters" we came across several product review sites and online cat forums where people had suffered from the fiberglass splinters, however these warnings were not known to us when buying the item online for the first time.

Given that Da Bird's manufacturer, Go Cat, prides itself on "Quality interactive cat toys handcrafted in the USA", we contacted them in early 2009, hoping that they might issue a warning to resellers of the toy, post a warning in the toy's packaging and change to a more safe and durable material to prevent serious injuries to cats.
In spite of the skin injury mentioned, they never responded to us.

There are certainly other materials that could serve as the wand, without the fiberglass splinters included! The fact that GoCat hasn't improved the safety of the product after several years of this issue being known speaks poorly of the company and its leadership.

We still use the product (two of them, actually), but had to tape the ends with electrical tape in an effort to "seal off" the fiberglass shards that are exposed at the tip of every wand, (exposed even when the wand is not damaged). The manufacturer does put small rubber caps on the wand ends, but they aren't very secure and both of them fell off of the ends after a short while. We're also now careful to keep the toys stowed away from the cats when not in use (BTW this also keeps toys interesting for cats: if they know a toy "lives" in a place they cannot normally access, they're a lot more excited when it comes out to play!)

One other tip for users: Our cats destroyed the feather ends pretty quickly so we've ordered a lot of refills - then a family member put an end to those purchases by making some cool, sturdy attachments out of scrap leather and fur from a fabric shop: we call them the "bat" and the "mouse", and we haven't had to order refills in a year!!

Great Cat Condo!, December 27, 2008

I ordered this on Sunday and recieved it on Tuesday! My 2 cats really enjoy climbing this sturdy tower and quite often are found sleeping on the top shelf. This unit is quite sturdy and it took less than 30 minutes to assemble it. I'm a 60 year old female so someone else may have been able to assemble it qicker. I definately reccommend this Tower.

I bought this cat tree for my two cats (one adult about a year old and one kitten about 4 months old) who had been disagreeing since the younger of the two arrived. They both instantly fell in love with it, and have even stopped fighting since it arrived! I worried at first that the top perch has the tiniest wobble to it, but it doesn't seem to bother either kitty. They play on it and sit next to each other watching the squirrels go by.

It's a great product that I'd recommend to anyone with one or more cats. It's really sturdy with a good solid base. As long as you tighten all the bolts enough, you shouldn't have any wobble to 95% of its structure (just the very top and only a tiny bit). Assembly is pretty easy, just make sure to put the flat headed bolts in the bottom of the base and not the rounded ones. That might sound like a no-brainer, but all but two of the bolts are the same length and width so it can get confusing if you're not paying close attention. Also, the directions show the two cat perches on top having the wall lip facing to the right side. My declawed cat found this problematic so I unscrewed the lower one and rotated it 90 degrees counter-clockwise and re-attached it. This seems to be a better configuration than the original because the lips now on the outside edges of the tree and serve to hold the kitties in rather than block their path to the top. The tall posts give both cats things to scratch so they can get a good stretch.

Hope you love yours as much as we love ours!

Toys present a health hazard, February 28, 2009

The tower itself is well made and easy to put together. The toys that come with the tower are another story. DO NOT USE THE TOYS!!!! They are balls of string you attach to the tower via an elastic string. We don't give our cats string becuase we know it is a serious risk, but with the toy being attached to the tower, I didn't think there would be a problem. Then I witnessed my very active kitty take the toy in his mouth and dive bomb off the tower. He got bits of string to come off the toy and promptly ate them. We ended up at the vet with a very sick kitty. He could have very easily died. The strings get caught in their intestines and can rub back and forth inside them like a saw until they cut all the way through. Our kitty was fortunate in that the strings did not cut all the way through, they just caused some bad irritation. Ridiculously simple, but elegantly effective, August 7, 2005

I was super-skeptical when I took this thing out of the bag.
It is literally a length of wire with some twisted brown paper bits on the ends (kindof like pieces of the thin round handles on a brown paper shopping bag). There's one piece on the end that you hold, and maybe 4 or so on the target-end for the kitty. The stiffness of the wire is just perfect such that when you hold it lightly, and the cat bats at the end, it bounces and flies all over the place, with near-zero effort on your part. You can, of course, move it some more on your own and entertain the cat with more movement, but it works very well to just hold the wire lightly. I was a little worried that it might poke an eye out or something, but the ends of the wire are bent into loops so that shouldn't happen. It is a stiff, significant-gauge wire though. Really, it's crazy-simple, but really effective. My kitten gets bored with the fancy feather wand I have for him, but he keeps going with the Cat Dancer until I take it away from him because I'm too tired to hold it out and watch to be sure he doesn't chomp down on too much wire. I wouldn't pay a lot for it, solely because I'd feel like a dolt for shelling money out for wire and paper/cardboard twisty bits, but it's a great toy.

i consider myself relatively creative professionally (am in marketing) so kept making a variety of what i thought would be fun toys for my cat. they ranged from simple to ornate - things you throw, things that move on their own, things that crawl, things that bounce, monochrome/colorful/etc. one day a colleague told me about this product, and from its description (a piece of wire with some wrapped paper) i was incredulous. she swore by it, so i bought it (cant beat the price)....

...my cat was obsessed. no other toy could distract her and amuse her the way this one did. i'd drag it and whip it around and she'd chase it everywhere. i could wake her from her sleep just by the sound of it rubbing against the rug, and she'd be off and chasing.

she NEVER tired of this toy. and our new kitten (and her new friend) took to it right away as well.

this 'toy' pissed me off to no end because it was so basic and simple, and yet worked where my ornate and 'thought out' toys (e.g. mini remote controlled cars with feathers attached) didnt.

Frontline Plus is the best of the lot in flea & tick prevention. This product does what it says it will; my dog had been tracking in ticks which I discovered a couple of times when I woke up a couple of mornings and found one of the vile creatures attached to my scalp. I found the best price for Frontline on amazon and so tentatively ordered it, hoping it wouldn't be old or fake - and I am happy to report that it was neither. I've only found one flea on my dog since apply this 3 weeks ago and it was at death's door; no ticks whatsoever! My dog has suffered no ill effects from it either. It's easy to apply and very much worth the money if your pet is plagued by fleas & ticks.

My cats have watched this two times now. The first time they watched for about 5 minutes and then got bored (and I watched thr est of it, haha). The second time my older cat seems interested and the younger cat is not at all. I think mostly they like the noises, when they hear the bird noises they start playing with each other, so I guess that is the point. The cover makes it look like a professional production but in reality I think some of it looks like a person with a video camera went and recorded some footage of their backyard and local park and then put it with some music...I could do it too. There is one part where they have a cat come on and it chases a string, this part is not very interesting for my cats. I wish I could choose which chapter to view for them because they express more interest in some than in other ones. Also, my friends had a cat video they showed me which is the one I was looking for but I didn't know its name, where there is a white background and the birds and insects are against the background so it is a lot easier to see for the cat. I think that one would be better. A lot of this one is just views of the trees and lake which my cats can see out the window in my house. It also has a strange storyline about a cat that was a stray but then he found a home. At least it made me laugh! :-D Someone should actually get all the videos and see which one the cat most enjoys because I'm not sure they tested this one on any cats at all.

My 1 year-old cat, Bob, got this DVD for Christmas and he absolutely loves it! As soon as he started hearing the nature noises he came over, sat in front of the TV and soon was pawing at the screen, trying to catch the butterflies. At one point I found him sitting on top of the tv, trying to catch one of the dangling strings!
I would highly recommend this DVD to cat owners. As I said, my Bob loves it - as a matter of fact, now he comes running every time he hears me turn on the tv, thinking we're going to watch his dvd!

My cats don't love being brushed, and this glove is just the thing. They love being petted, and if I pet them while wearing this glove, loose fur comes off readily. The first time I used it on my cat Ellie, I felt like I'd removed enough fur to make another cat. Ollie, who is more prone to overstimulation, can only tolerate a minute or so, but even that is very effective at removing loose fur. I highly recommend this product!

This is a well made product with a soft rubberized pad on the palm and another smaller one on the thumb. There are 100+ or so small 1/4 inch nubs sticking out of these pads. The glove itself is a sturdy flexible nylon mesh material. There is a elastic wrist band with a adjustable velcro strap. I have a fairly large hand and the glove is a perfect fit. If you have a smaller hand the slack can be taken up by the velcro strap. Check out my photos under Customer Images on the product page.

I use this in tandem with my Cat Zoom Groom - Assorted Colors brush. The Cat Zoom seems to work better getting the deep down hair out. And this one cleans up after that brush and gets most of the loose hair that's left.

This glove will clean up fairly easy if there is a lot of hair on it. All you have to do is start peeling one end, and the rest will peel off in one sheet of hair. A bit harder if there is only a small amount of hair on the glove. It can be washed off with a hose outside, that worked for me.

Forgot to mention, Kitty loves it. He even comes back for seconds which is unusual for him. Our new little girl shelter kitten "Baby" loves it also.

If you're looking at flea treatments for dogs, you're probably looking at this product because you don't want to spend a lot of money buying the same product from the vet (or having to pay the vet for the consultation fee just to be able to buy the product you know you need). This is the same thing my vet gave me the last time my dog needed a flea treatment.
