My puppy has fleas pretty bad. He has been digging & his skin has scabs on it. I heard that you can use lemon juice or lemons to kill fleas. I know they make a pill, shampoo, & flea treatments for that too I just don’t have the money to buy those right now. Do you all know anything that I can do for him & his flea problem other than getting the flea pill or treatment and flea shampoo?

What customers say about What are some good ways to get rid of fleas on my puppy??

  1. you can wash him with dawn dishsoap to get the fleas off of him now but if he has them that bad then they are in your house and yard as well. you need to treat the yard, house, and dog and any other animals in the home.

for temporary relief try dawn dishsoap and comb him daily.

  2. how old is your puppy?

  3. dawn dish soap

  4. for my pup i just used a shampoo at pet co that was a bright orange and in two washes they were gone…
srri dnt know whats it called

  5. the best thing is the medicine. Frontline or Advantix. You’ll prolly have to bomb your house with flea spray. Fleas live in the carpet and furniture, after they stop biting your pup they’ll start attacking you. I would scrounge around to get the money or your puppy is going to be miserable!

  6. Wash with Dawn Dish washing detergent to rid the pup of all fleas. Then treat the pup with a good flea & tic oil. Read the instructions to make sure the pup is old enough to tolerate the flea oil treatment.

  7. The capstar pill is the best way to get rid of fleas right away. Have you tried asking local rescues if they can help you or if they know of low cost clinics? Also keep in mind that you will have to treat the whole house (and possibly the yard too) to make sure that the fleas do not come back. Here is how to treat the house:
-vacuum and clean every fabric in the house. For pillows or stuffed pet beds you can put them inside several plastic trash bags and put them in a freezer for several days. Then treat the carpet with a powder and/or bomb the house. You may have to repeat this.
-For the yard, make sure the grass is cut low and treat it with a chemical that kills fleas (most that kill other bugs will state that they kill fleas)

For now you can use dawn dish soap as a flea bath and use a flea comb to try to catch some adult fleas. It will not work as well as frontline/advantage/revolution but it will help. You can give your puppy a bath as often as every three days, just be careful that he or she does not get too cold.

  8. YOU NEED A PRESCRIPTION FROM YOUR VET! Come on, this poor puppy has scabs from all of the itching. Stop trying to find a cheap cure and be a responsible pet owner. None of these home cures like dish soap or lemon juice or shampoos are effective. Either they don’t work at all, or the fleas just keep coming back. Get to the vet for REAL medication, and then get him on a monthly preventative. If you can’t afford appropriate vet care, find this puppy a new home, with someone who CAN!

You will also need to call an exterminator and have them treat your entire house and backyard.

  9. You really need to find a way to pay for good prescription flea control from a vet. It will get a whole lot more expensive to treat all the damage a bad flea infestation will cause if you don’t treat it right. I’m not just trying to scare you with unlikely things that could happen, but truth of what will happen. This includes skin infection (which needs vet attention with antibiotics, medicated shampoo, and still prescription flea control) and worms (again vet care, with meds, and prescription flea control). Because your flea problem sounds pretty bad then over the counter flea control won’t cut it. You need the good stuff that you get from the vet. Ask your vet about Comfortis. I think it works awesome. I live in a climate that is really bad for fleas so I have tried them all.
